Trident Technical College`s Paralegal program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding of legal ethics necessary to work under the supervision of lawyers in the provision of legal services. The program has been endorsed by the American Bar Association since 1993. Paralegals, also known as paralegals, work closely with lawyers – often performing many of the same tasks as lawyers, but always under the supervision of a lawyer. They are expressly prohibited from performing tasks considered a legal practice, such as providing legal advice, setting lawyers` fees and bringing cases before the courts. Paralegals do research, write reports, contracts and other official documents. STATEMENT ON UNAUTHORIZED PRACTICE OF LAW (UPL): Paralegals operate under the supervision of a licensed attorney and are not licensed to practice law in South Carolina (S.C. Code Ann. § 40-5-310 (1976)). Paralegals must have attention to detail and good organizational skills. They should enjoy the challenge of constantly learning new things. Paralegals must also be able to work well under pressure, meet deadlines conscientiously, and have good computer skills. Most paralegals do most of their work in law offices and libraries, but they occasionally travel for research or other assignments.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, paralegals who work for businesses or government agencies typically work 40 hours a week, but those who work for law firms are sometimes asked to work overtime when deadlines threaten. Paralegals work in traditional law firms, state and federal governments, legal departments of hospitals and health care organizations, universities, insurance companies, banks and other businesses, as well as many other related legal and legal entities.
