University of Edinburgh Free Legal Advice Centre

The centre is run by volunteer students, academic staff, support staff and supervising lawyers. All students are supervised by a qualified lawyer. This means that our advice is always reviewed before you receive it. Currently, we are unable to provide legal representation in court or in the vast majority of court proceedings. The Law Society of Scotland has a full list of Solictors you can represent. You can contact the center by emailing us at freelegaladvice@ed.ac.uk. A member of our team will send you an email and answer your questions. You can also call our toll-free number on 0800 073 0150 and leave a message. Please note that our voicemail is monitored less frequently than our email. However, we will do our best to call you back as soon as possible. We can advise and assist you in the following areas: Students and postgraduate students in each law programme and year are encouraged to volunteer for positions within the administrative and operational team. This is an opportunity to gain legal, administrative and operational experience in all pro bono clinics and CLE department. Applications for AY 21/22 are now closed.

To learn more about what volunteering with the Centre for Free Legal Advice entails, please contact our volunteer legal and clinical training team for freelegaladvice@ed.ac.uk clients who wish to obtain free legal advice, contact the Centre and provide a brief overview of their specific legal issue, whether contract, employment or housing. Clients are then encouraged to consult with their student advisor, who is paired with a practicing lawyer with experience in the specific area of law. If you have any questions about our centre`s advice, please email us at freelegaladvice@ed.ac.uk or call our toll-free number on 0800 073 0150 (voicemail only) and a member of our team will be happy to answer your questions. The Free Legal Advice Center (FLAC) is a student-run legal clinic that provides legal services to the local community. No. We recommend that you visit the Law Society of Scotland website for full advice on seeking legal aid for a criminal case. The Centre is run by law students from the University of Edinburgh and staff from the Edinburgh Law School and supported by pro bono lawyers.

The University of Edinburgh covers the running costs of the centre. Donations consisting of donations and student funds go into the future development of the center. To make an appointment, please email freelegaladvice@ed.ac.uk or call 0800 073 0150 (voicemail only) and confirm your full name, postal address including postcode, email, phone number and a brief summary of the concern you are seeking advice on. I enjoyed the experience of meeting a real customer for the first time. During those short 50 minutes, I no longer felt like a law student, but like a real legal advisor. I am confident that I have made the right career choice on my path to qualification as a lawyer and look forward to my future client relationships. In addition, I have developed a very good working relationship with my supervising lawyer and I am grateful for all her advice, both in my case and my own legal career.

I look forward to staying in touch as I progress. I had the opportunity to provide legal advice for the first time in my academic career, but in a safe and supervised environment. The experience has greatly improved my learning experience, not only in terms of legal knowledge, but also in terms of managing clients and their expectations. However, these benefits were secondary to the ability to help vulnerable people on the ground. The recession has exacerbated poverty and reduced support services, while funding for counselling services has declined. Free legal aid services are therefore becoming increasingly important in today`s society. Currently, the Free Legal Advice Centre only gives graduate students the opportunity to volunteer. While there are several issues regarding students offering free legal advice, the possibility of an enhanced learning experience if these are overcome is unparalleled. In addition, more student advisors would help more clients. If you are a graduate student looking for more experience, it may be possible to take on another case later in the degree year. Please let us know by contacting the Centre at freelegaladvice@ed.ac.uk or by speaking to the Centre`s Coordinator. The free legal aid centre provides pro bono legal services to members of the public who otherwise do not have access to legal advice.

By offering this service, students, including all graduate students and a number of students, have the opportunity to participate in practical legal work for the benefit of the wider community while putting their legal skills into practice, often for the first time. The Free Legal Advice Centre provides pro bono legal services to members of the public living in and around Edinburgh who, for whatever reason, do not have access to legal advice elsewhere. Student advisors, staff and qualified lawyers advise together on legal issues. The Free Legal Advice Centre at Edinburgh Law School is long established and is a highly regarded volunteer service in the region. During my degree studies, I had the opportunity to act as a student advisor at the center. I took the opportunity to put my legal skills into practice for the first time while providing a meaningful and important service. *Please note that due to essential maintenance work, the University of Edinburgh will not be able to accept online donations between Wednesday 28 September 2022 and Tuesday 11 October 2022. We apologize for the inconvenience.
