UCalgary`s non-legal courses count towards surrogacy calculations; Non-legal courts in other institutions do not. You can claim up to 9 credit hours for your ND for courses taken outside of law school in your second and third years, with the approval of the Associate Dean, Student Services. Courses should be at a level of 400 or higher and greatly broaden your understanding of the law and legal system. Courses must not include a topic that can be taken at UCalgary Law. Through the JD/MBA, you will cover a wide range of topics. Core law courses cover topics such as constitutional law, contracts, property law, dispute resolution, administrative law, trade associations, and ethical advocacy. Business courses develop and refine your knowledge and practical skills in finance and accounting, people and organizations, supply chain and business analysis, and leadership development. Discover the many clinical courses that will allow you to apply your knowledge in real-life situations, from business and environmental law to tax law and pro bono work. To be admitted, Canadian high school students in Alberta must have completed five of the following courses with an average of at least 65%: Third-year students can go to another Canadian common law school for a semester or year while earning a JD from UCalgary. You must take the required courses and requirements for the second and third years, and you must take the courses en bloc at the beginning of the winter semester. The approval of the Assistant Dean, Student Services is required. Once you have been approved for the exchange, you will need to obtain approval from the Associate Dean, Student Services, for the courses offered. Email course outlines and descriptions for each proposed course, as well as the number of units worth each course, at least five business days before the course registration deadline at the scheduled institution.

The host law school will promptly review the application and accept the student in principle, unless there is a reasonable reason to reject the applicant. Students will complete their second year of law at their first school and years 3 and 4 at the partner school. Working closely with the advisor, students receive guidance to ensure they take all the courses from each school necessary to graduate. These programs are designed to give students priority access to courses corresponding to those recommended by vocational schools. While these programs have been designed to be seamlessly transferred to our partner universities, they are not exclusive and could be used to transfer to other professional schools. Students should seek advice from the school to which they wish to be transferred, if this is their intention. Third-year students have the opportunity to complete an accredited law program at an international law school or civil law school in Canada. The international requirement of the upper year may be supplemented by an international exchange for an academic semester if approved by the Vice-Dean. The most logical term for the exchange is the autumn semester of the third year, when no compulsory courses are scheduled.
